New app for smartphones to help the visually impaired

January saw an update to the smartphone app ‘Be my Eyes’ which allows the video image from a smartphone to be relayed to online volunteers, e.g. to read a label or instructions in order to help blind or visually impaired people.
An aim of the LOMID project is not to enable this kind of functionality, but rather to provide hardware and software to allow safe ‘navigation’ of visually impaired persons, for example to avoid street furniture or parked cars.
