Dr Tony Maindron of the LOMID project (from the French research organisation CEA Leti) recently gave an invited talk at the 24th International Display Workshop (held in Sendai, Japan) on how to make curved OLED/CMOS microdisplays – one of the innovations from the LOMID project.
We have shown that it is possible to make microdisplays very thin, so that they can be curved with a radius of less than 5 cm. This will allow future optical designs for near-eye viewing (e.g. in VR headsets) to be lighter and cheaper and/or to give better performance, especially for peripheral vision.
This video shows a functioning curved OLED on CMOS display, created using CEA’s approach.
